VECTA

Combined CO, NO2, NO & Visibility Monitor for Tunnels – Single Point

The Acoem VECTA is an intelligent, standalone tunnel monitor that measures visibility and up to two toxic gases (CO, NO2, NO) in a single sensor. By eliminating the need for separate control units and complex multi-sensor arrays, its in-situ design drastically reduces installation, cabling, and capital costs while offering direct Modbus or analogue integration with SCADA systems.

Advanced measurement technology

The VECTA integrates two distinct, high-precision measurement principles into a single, compact housing to provide a comprehensive view of the tunnel atmosphere.

Dual-purpose optical visibility & smoke detection

The VECTA utilises a light-scattering technique for highly sensitive visibility measurements. An internal light source (TX turret) emits a beam, and a receiver (RX turret) detects light scattered by particles in the air.

This monitor delivers precision readings over a standard road tunnel range of 0 to 15 km-1, whilst its high dynamic range allows it to double as a dry smoke monitor
(up to 4000 km-1) for rapid fire detection. Built-in temperature and humidity compensation ensures stable performance across all environmental conditions.

Intelligent electrochemical gas sensing

Toxic gas concentrations are measured using specialised electrochemical cells.

  • Modular “smart” design: These cells are housed within pre-calibrated, plug-in Gas Sensor Modules. These modules store their own factory calibration data, serial numbers, and expiry dates, which the VECTA’s main CPU reads automatically upon installation.
  • Reliable performance: To ensure accuracy in the variable conditions of a tunnel, the gas measurements are fully compensated for temperature and humidity.
  • Multi-gas capability: The system can monitor up to two toxic gases simultaneously (typically CO, NO2, NO), with a response time (T90) of less than 60 seconds.

The “single-point” efficiency paradigm

The VECTA’s primary technical advantage lies in its ability to measure up to eight parameters simultaneously from a single mounting location. Unlike traditional tunnel monitoring that requires separate instruments for visibility and each specific toxic gas, the VECTA integrates light-scattering technology for visibility with dual gas monitoring ports for electrochemical cells. This consolidation significantly lowers the “Total Cost of Ownership” by reducing the electrical infrastructure needed—requiring only one power and comms cable rather than a complex web of wiring for multiple standalone sensors.

Maintenance revolution: the plug-and-play GSM

The core of the VECTA’s gas measurement system is the pre-calibrated Gas Sensor Module (GSM). In most tunnel environments, calibration is a logistical nightmare involving the transport of heavy, high-pressure gas cylinders into active traffic bores. The VECTA eliminates this by utilising smart modules that store their own factory calibration data. Maintenance staff can simply swap an expired module for a new one in minutes, achieving instant recalibration without ever opening a gas bottle in the tunnel.

Accessories & software

  • VECTA utility software: Windows-based package for instrument set-up, control, real-time data logging, and diagnostic overrides.
