Hyperlocal air quality monitoring

The mapping of hyperlocal air pollution is key to driving clean air initiatives

Air pollution is harmful to human health, and its impacts — increased hospital visits, missed work and school days, boxes of rescue inhalers at schools — are frequent reminders that its risks are real and personal. Moreover, these risks are highest for some of the most vulnerable populations: children, the elderly, and people with already compromised respiratory systems. Because air pollution is hard to see, it’s often hard for local leaders to pinpoint sources and trends to develop effective solutions. New sensor technology is changing that dynamic, allowing us to measure and map pollution concentrations block by block and identify patterns and hotspots like never before.

Because air pollution is hard to see, it’s often hard for local leaders to pinpoint sources and  trends to develop effective solutions. New sensor technology is changing that dynamic, allowing us to measure and map pollution concentrations block by block and identify patterns and hotspots like never before.

Compared to conventional air pollution management, which commonly relies on a few sparsely located monitors and modeling, hyperlocal monitoring allows for a more holistic picture of air quality at a high spatial resolution (with different concentrations every 30 meters, for example) and frequency (different concentrations every minute or few minutes, rather than on an hourly or daily basis).

Hyperlocal monitoring can fill a gap in places where modeled data is not available. Additionally, measuring on-the-ground pollution allows for a better understanding of the true exposure and health impacts of air pollution, which can then result in targeted solutions.

New standards of excellence in near reference sensor based technology

Designed to cover all needs: With a low-cost of ownership and accurate measurement of target pollutants, Acoem presents Kunak AIR Pro – Hyperlocal air monitoring sensors a revolutionary sensor based technology useful for cities, industries, and researchers that need to make better decisions based on supplementary systems with large data & accurate data.

Kunak AIR Pro is a small, multi-pollutant, patent-pending air quality station for measuring CO, CO2, NO, NO2, O3, SO2, H2S, NH3, VOCs, PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 and environmental data like temperature, humidity and pressure, that offers the possibility of connecting external sensors & probes through various connectors.

It includes some innovations never seen before like its plug & play Smart Gas Cartridges, its autonomous operation thanks to the solar panel, the wireless data transmission in real-time, the remote easy calibration tool, and a web-based cloud platform to visualise, analyse and manage the data, and many more.

All those characteristics make this new station one of the most innovative products on the outdoor air quality monitoring market.

Hybrid network monitoring

The future of urban air quality monitoring

Urban air quality is particularly difficult to measure due to highly heterogeneous pollution distribution. It is therefore crucial to create a dense air quality monitoring network to better understand the spatiotemporal variations in pollutant concentration, with the ability to pinpoint hotspots. While continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations (CAAQMS) remains the gold standard for precise, reliable and globally trusted reference standard measurements, it is often unviable or impractical to deploy them at a spatial density sufficient for measuring air quality with high spatiotemporal details.

The optimal solution therefore — and the logical future of urban air quality monitoring —lies in the implementation of a hybrid air quality monitoring network. The most effective hybrid system consists of traditional ambient air quality monitors as reference stations and localized, smaller sensor-based monitors for spatially dense data generation
